chase. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco's mission district at one of the crime scenes related to this point,. >> reporter: i want to show you now this is one of the cars involved in that chase that that driver hit one of two parked cars tulip. here's the surprising detail about that driver. this is her fourth dui in the past 10 years. take a look at some video from the scene earlier. i'll walk you through. the suspect drove on to a closed on-ramp to westbound 80. a chp tried to pull her over. then she exited on mission and van ness and the chase began. she led officers through small streets in the mission and in that short time she hit one car that rolled forward and hit a cyclist. that cyclist was taken to san francisco general hospital is expected to be okay. but after that she continued on to hit another parked car that one we showed you when we first

were here at the beginning of our shot before hitting another light pole at 17th and van ness knocking out the traffic lights in this area which are still currently out. now back out live you can see just that damage that the driver caused again, one of two parked cars that this female hit in the course of leading officers on that chase. again, also injuring a cyclist in the course of that. but again, that cyclist is expected to be okay. but when i spoke to a chp officer on the phone it's because another person was involved now she is facing some serious charges and he gave me those. she will be facing a felony dui, reckless evading including dui enhancement meaning she has had multiple duis in the past years. as far as the investigation is concerned, they will be investigating each collision later on. cate caugiran, cbs 5. crews are on the scene of a second suspicious fire in

vallejo overnight. this two-alarm fire started around 3:00 inside the village bar on tuolumne street. a few hours earlier crews battled another suspicious house fire nearby. at this time investigators have no cause for either fire. nobody was injured. good news there. we have a crew headed to the scene and we'll bring you the very latest on the investigation coming up in our next hour. another structure fire this morning. this one right here in san francisco. all the smoke forcing residents out of their homes early this morning. fire crews arrived on the scene on noe street around 2 a.m. they say it all started in a wall heater. a lot of water and smoke damage. smoke detectors got neighbors out of bed into the streets. >> ton of smoke coming out. so i went back in and got my roommate and told him about it and he got out of the house. >> less than an hour ago, fire crews allowed residents to return back inside their homes. something went terribly wrong when a group took its

nightly walk into the east bay hills. a hiker plunged to his death on the uc-berkeley campus. the man's body was found on the edge of campus. the 20-year-old man disappeared while walking with friends. they called 911 about 6:30 last night. university police found his body about 200 feet down a steep ravine. foul play is not suspected but the death is still under investigation. 5:04 now. san jose is facing a serious safety problem, a shortage of officers patrolling their streets. facing lower wages and benefits, for san jose officers are resigning. there are now less than 1,000 officers in the department available for full duty. 583 are patrolling the streets in a city of nearly a million people. >> there is no wiggle room. anytime you move personnel, you'll be robbing peter to pay paul. that's the reality that we live in. >> mayor reed says 44 men and women are going through the academy right now. those officers should be ready

to hit streets of san jose next june. closing arguments set in contra costa county this morning in the case of a man who killed his ex-girlfriend and another man at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza. this is the penalty phase in the trial of nathan burris who was convicted of the two murders last week. he could face the death penalty. two women home alone fought off an armed prowler. the suspect may have stab wounds in the chest. according to police he broke that a san rafael apartment tuesday night. the women say he was armed with a knife. he got into a fight with one of them of the the other roommate grabbed a phone and called police. other neighbors say they heard yelling. >> kind of scary when you have young people in the house with you, too. >> the victim, who was being attacked, turned the knife on the assailant and the women told police that he ran away. police alerted nearby hospitals that the suspect may try to seek medical attention. rain and a lot of it expected later this week and

that's a big worry in the area hit by the mud slide in daly city. they are doing what they can now to protect the neighborhood around hillside park. that includes stacking bales of hay and clearing out storm drains. hay will contain the mud and keep it from doing any more damage after tuesday's big mud slide. >> so we're going to take our remote control tv camera to go into the pipe itself and then get to the storm drain and identify where this is. then we can excavate it out and divert water to the location. >> officials don't expect more problems from the 8" pipe that broke but it's likely to take weeks to get the pipe fixed. 5:06 let's get a check on the weather. the heavens are going to up quick i have a feeling. >> they could see another half inch of rain in daly city from this next storm system. shouldn't be flooding rain. outside now it's dry. we have a couple of clouds in the north bay, fog. mid- to high-level clouds moving in especially in the

afternoon. the temperatures right now 39 degrees with that fog into santa rosa, 42 in livermore. 46 in san jose. and 54 degrees in san francisco. look what's off the coastline. those spiraling clouds that's your next storm system going to pay a visit to the bay area starting to slide to the bay area throughout the day today. still, we are going to see a very pleasant day. the temperatures not as warm as yesterday but not bad. 60s and 70s yesterday. today close in some spots to the upper 60s but a little bit cooler and those clouds will be on the increase and tonight we could see rain late and then unsettled for the weekend. more or that coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we are bracing for tomorrow morning's commute. thanks, lawrence. outside, yeah, it's pretty quiet wherever you go. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we just checked in with caltrans folks and they say that they have cleared the roadwork that was on the upper deck of the bay bridge if you are heading into san francisco. san mateo bridge no delay in either direction. 14 minutes between hayward and foster city. so looking good towards the

the military has suspended the security clearance for the woman at the center of the petreaus scandal. paula broadwell a former army intelligence officer who had high clearance. cbs news has learned the identity of the fbi agent who first brought the case to the bureau frederick humphries. he is a friend of florida socialite jill kelley. she went to him when she started getting harassing e- mails from broadwell. in "your world this morning," three people are reported dead after a rocket attack on southern israel from the gaza strip. the attack on an apartment building comes after israel launched a military operation this week on gaza which is governed by the palestinian militant group hamas. the operation began after previous rocket attacks on israel. palestinian officials say president mahmoud abbas has cut short a trip to europe to deal with the crisis. a new person has been named head of the communist party in china.

all the way down? a lot of overnight roadwork was picked up now that it's past 5 a.m. here's a live look near the dublin interchange. westbound 580 so far, so good 15 minutes is that drive time from the altamont pass towards pleasanton. and if you are heading the opposite direction eastbound 580 you may still find roadwork heading out towards livermore. here's a live look at the nimitz. more roadwork this morning. this is still there southbound 880 from embarcadero towards jackson. as you get closer towards the coliseum and oakland airport, though, everything looks good. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. traffic heading towards doyle drive. they still have that roadwork possibly in lanes. it looks like they are in the clearing stages now on the north end of the waldo tunnel towards sir francis drake. but if you are heading in the commute direction we saw some lanes change trucks cruise by a little earlier, so they have more lanes open towards doyle drive and san francisco. westbound highway 4 so far

actually looks good. we are not seeing any sign of brake lights no changing color on our sensors from antioch towards concord. that's a nice trip in both directions. westbound 580 you will notice some brake lights now through stretches of the altamont pass almost towards vasco road. it's not enough to impact your drive time, though. 15 minutes between those wind turbines and 680 and the dublin interchange. more "timesaver traffic" camera coming up. in the meantime we're talking weather and major changes. here's lawrence. >> yes. we have been having some spectacular weather over the last couple of days, elizabeth, but that's all about to change. it is quiet outside right now. mostly clear skies toward the coastline and inside the bay. a couple of patches of fog showing up in some of the north bay valleys so watch out for that. 40s and 50s for the most part right now but this afternoon, we are going to notice those clouds start to thicken up. cooler but nice. temperatures mainly in the 60s pushing 70 degrees in the warmest spots inland. but just off the coastline, we have this area of spiraling clouds that area of low

pressure that's going to approach the coast throughout the day today. high pressure going to start to give way now and those clouds will start to flow in later today and then tonight, i think we start talking about some raindrops. rain becoming more likely as we head throughout the day tomorrow and that's going to open the storm door, i think a stronger storm moves in toward late saturday into sunday. but quiet this morning early on. clouds later in the afternoon and thickening up in the evening hours and staying dry. that will change though later on tonight into tomorrow morning. chance of more scattered showers developing, then i think picking up throughout the day tomorrow. so not a washout early on tomorrow. but as we go through the day the rain will be picking up, as well. all right. this is what we're expecting as far as rainfall totals. an inch or so into the santa cruz mountains a half inch into san francisco through saturday morning. about a half inch in pleasanton. so you get the idea, nice little soaker and there's a stronger one after that. temperatures expected to be in the 60s mainly outside today so fairly mild day with clouds moving in and then we get into

school and there's a whole lot of noise. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: the marching band is hard at work practicing for their next gig. >> we rehearse a lot, and these students are very, very dedicated to the program and more importantly they are dedicated to each other. >> reporter: and their dedication has paid off. they were selected to perform in the tournament of roses parade in pasadena. the parade, watched by 40 million people worldwide, is competitive. hundreds of bands applied and only 22 were chosen including valley christian. >> definitely probably one of the biggest accomplishments that a high school band can get. >> reporter: and they are sharing the accomplishment of another band beijing 57 all the way in china. in april valley christian traveled to beijing. now through technology the two bands practice their songs together bridging the cultural gap with music.

u.s. justice department have agreed on a plea deal with the company paying billions of dollars in fines. 11 people were killed in the 2010 explosion resulting in that big oil leak that caused long-term environmental damage and major economic problems for gulf coast cities. new this morning, locally, a wild chase ends with injuries and an arrest. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco with new information about a drunk driving suspect apparently with a history of dui. cate. >> reporter: michelle, a long history of duis. this is her fourth dui arrest in the past 10 years. so again it's not looking good for this driver as well as the area. we are at 17th and van ness where you can see the mess. the traffic lights are still out after the drunk driver led chp officers on the short chase through the mission district. but let me show you some video from hours before. you can see the damage that this driver caused. chp says the suspect drove on

it a closed freeway on-ramp and the officer on duty saw this and tried to pull her over at ninth street but she kept going. she exited off mission and van ness and that's where the chase began and then things got worse. she hit a parked car and that parked car rolled on to a cyclist. the car hit another parked car blocks away before hitting a light pole knocking out the traffic lights in the area. back out live, crews are here cleaning up the mess. in addition, they want to restore the traffic lights here in the area. chp says the cyclist is expected to be okay. she did not hit him directly. the cyclist had minor injuries. both were taken to san francisco general hospital. this woman will be facing some serious charges this morning especially because a pedestrian was involved. the few charges that she will

be facing include felony dui, reckless invading, enhanced felony dui because this is her fourth dui arrest and it involved a pedestrian. a three-alarm fire in the village bar on tuolumne street. crews battled a house fire nearby. no cause for either fire, no injuries. we have a crew heading to the scene. we'll have the latest coming up at 6:00. smoke forced several san francisco residents out of their homes early this morning. firefighters say a wall heater may have sparked the fire at this noe street complex just before 2 a.m. no one was injured in this fire and most of the damage was cause by smoke and water. it is 5:33 now. a man's body was found on the uc-berkeley campus. authorities found the 20-year- old down a 200-foot ravine

yesterday. the man disappeared while walking with friends last night. they called 911. foul play is not suspected. oakland has two weeks to figure out the situation with the police force. some are calling for a receiver to take control. department. two sides must have a list of the agreements by the november 29. the city of san jose has a shortage of officers. there's less than 600 officers patrolling the streets for a city of a million people. officials say they are losing officers to retirement or resignation. >> there is no wiggle room. anytime you move personnel here you're going to be robbing peter to pay paul. >> san jose's mayor says 44 men and women are going through the academy. they will be on the streets in june. crews in daly city are racing to prevent mud mess from a water main break from getting

worse. they call it weatherization. it includes stacking bales of hay and clearing out storm drains but rain this week including today. the hay will contain the mud and keep it from doing any more damage after the tuesday mud slide. meanwhile it's expected to take weeks to repair the 8" cast iron broke that broke, the culprit that made that big mess on tuesday. maybe a little rain in the forecast will create a bigger mess. >> probably will and from what mr. lawrence karnow says, the storm door is open in a big way. >> i don't think we are going to see flooding rains but definitely concern. the hillside has already come down and they will have half in. of rain tomorrow. this is the last day to weatherize. we have a series of storms lining up in the pacific. it's quiet this morning. temperatures in the 40s and 50s, patchy fog in the north bay valleys so watch out for that but you see that low off the coastline. those spinning clouds around are going to slowly slide in our direction throughout the day today so some increasing cloud throughout the day but

staying dry. that will change later on tonight into tomorrow. temperature-wise not bad. near 70 in morgan hill. 68 san jose. 68 degrees in cupertino. east bay well into the 60s by the afternoon. so sunshine and a mixture of high clouds on the increase. 68 in oakland and 64 degrees in sausalito. this is all about to change. the rain is coming. we'll have more on that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. there is a problem near that 92/101 interchange. they were doing overnight roadwork in the area and we are just getting word of an accident on northbound 101 approaching highway 92. chp says there may have been a problem possibly cones still left over from that overnight closure on that connector ramp from westbound 92 to northbound 101. so we're checking it now but it looks like there are possibly lanes blocked again on northbound 101. it sounds like it's close to kehoe right there in san mateo. westbound 580 brake lights drive time up to 19 minutes now

between the altamont pass and 680. we also have an accident reported in livermore eastbound lanes of 580 approaching airway so just a heads up. that's against the commute. also really super busy already through antioch. you can see one of the our live drive time sensors shows 11 miles an hour, really bottlenecking approaching a street lone tree way. past those antioch exits, you can see everything then moves up to top speeds over 40 miles per hour. and a quick check of the silicon valley commute where everything is still light actually on westbound 237 leaving milpitas heading towards san jose. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. some new details on the founder of that antivirus company who was wanted for questioning in a belize murder case. john mcafee has been hiding from cops after his neighbor was found dead on sunday. he apparently called the "associated press" saying he has a young woman helping him stay a step ahead of the officers who want to kill him. he also said he didn't kill anybody. investigators say they just want to talk to him and say he

[ laughter ] >> there's a joke in there somewhere. >> kind of boils it down to a simple little thing there. >> no kidding. the generation gap is alive and well when it comes to finances. >> a new survey found sharply conflicting expectations between older parents and their adult children. here to discuss and help us conduct the dreaded money talk, jill schlesinger, editor at large for cbsmoneywatch.com. what did they find, jill? >> reporter: well, it didn't surprise anyone. family members disagree when asked privately about these hard-to-discuss topics. 24% of adult children expect to help their parents financially at some point while 97% of the parents say we are not going to need help at all. the bigger problem only a small number of families 10% discussed finances in any

comprehensive way. that of course is the biggest issue to tackle. >> jill, i wish i would have had talked to you about this about three weeks ago. do you have any suggestions about talking to parents about money? >> oh, there's a story there. >> reporter: it is hard -- yeah, exactly. it is hard to balance being a responsible adult child, you know, because you don't want to seem like you're prying but this is very important. even if your loved ones appear to be completely self- sufficient, remember, neurologists say that cognitive ability starts sliding as early as 60! and additionally, regulators warn that older americans, they are the biggest targets of financial scams. so when is the easiest time to have a conversation? well, when your parents bring up something about money. maybe it's a complaint about low cd rates or the markets are doing so rotten, a high utility bill. the early conversation does not have to be a forensic accounting of every last nickel of your parents's finances.

you just want to open the door. here's something important. it may be helpful to bring in a third party. according to the survey, two- thirds of parents and adult children said they might be more comfortable talking about these matters to an impartial financial pro like a certified financial planner, a cpa or an estate attorney. now, i'm sorry i'm three weeks late for you. those phishs scams. that's scary. we have changes coming our way in the bay area. starting out quiet this morning out the door. no rain just yet. it is clear along the coastline and inside the bay. couple of patches of fog showing up in the north bay valleys. temperatures mainly in the 40s and the 50s. this afternoon though we'll notice some changes. we'll have some mild temperatures but the clouds will start to be on the increase. that's a storm system off the coastline that will be paying a visit to the bay area very shortly now. high pressure starting to weaken. you can see that low just off the coastline. that ridge finally giving way after what's been a spectacular few days. but now it is looking like we are getting back to the rain as the system moves onshore later on tonight into friday. we are expecting a good soaker from this one and then more rain on the way for the weekend. let's see if we can time it out. starting out clear this morning early on and then the clouds begin to move in as we head throughout the day today into the evening commute. it's looking dry. so don't have to worry about it then. overnight tonight toward tomorrow morning showers becoming more likely not a total washout but rain on the

increase throughout the day tomorrow. with that in mind, traveling out of sfo, no problems today, mostly clear, no delays. across the country looking good. sunshine, 70 degrees in houston, partly cloudy skies in denver, chicago and also new york. around the bay today we are expecting those temperatures to stay very mild with the increasing clouds. mainly into the 60s. but big changes in the seven- day forecast. how about this? rain expected for tomorrow. showers continuing into saturday. a stronger storm saturday night into sunday. staying unsettled and possibly wet through the middle of next week, elizabeth. >> it never ends. thanks, lawrence. outside right now, as we mentioned it is nice and dry and so far pretty quiet. we are starting to see some more delays in some areas though because now we're approaching or getting closer towards 6:00. so you can see some delays especially in those cash lanes. the fastrak lanes are usually our bright spot at this time of the morning until they turn the metering lights on. so just kind of a similar pattern this morning heading into san francisco. they did pick:the roadwork by the way on the upper deck.

elsewhere, to our maps and live traffic cameras. they picked up overnight roadwork southbound 880 near downtown oakland approaching embarcadero so now everything is good to go towards the coliseum and it continues to look good actually towards highway 92 and hayward. other bridges here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. they have more southbound 101 lanes open now if you are heading towards doyle drive and san francisco drive time in the clear between san rafael and the golden gate bridge toll plaza. so they did slowly pick up this overnight closure from westbound 92 to northbound 101. apparently it was causing some sort of a problem for drivers and there was an accident in that area. it's now cleared to the right- hand shoulder. that is your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> we are going to stick with that road theme. thanks, liz. a bay area community filled with million-dollar homes but 10-cent streets. a new report showing larkspur has the worst roads in the bay area. that's according to the metropolitan transportation commission. it tied for last place with st.
